Soon though it was realized that the songs they wrote for totally inappropriate for the artists that ABC had signed such as Dusty Springfield and Three Dog Night.
Fagen and Becker begin to put a band together with Katz as their producer. So gave rise to one of the more celebrated group names in Rock history. Since both Fagen and Becker were both avid readers of 's "Beat" literature, they decided to name the band "Steely Dan" after a dildo in William Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch'.
This line-up recorded their first album 'Can't Buy A Thrill'. It was released to little to no fanfare but after a surprise hit emerged with 'Do It Again' ABC pressures the group to hit the road.
A second hit in 'Reelin In the Years' drove the album to peak at 17 in the charts. Pressure from the label to capitalize on their success ate at the group, and led to the hurriedly recorded fellow-up album 'Countdown to Ecstasy' wish has a looser sound and has long been a fan favorite. Yet the pressures of touring began to tear the 'band' apart.
After a third album, Pretzel Logic the group that recorded the three albums dissolved and Fagen and Becker swore off touring and became in essence a studio band. Bringing in outside musicians, very often the cream of the crop of studio musicians to help flesh out their musical ideas.
Many of those studio aces were from the world of jazz and with the creative freedom that big name groups enjoyed for a brief time in 70's they went to work putting their love of jazz through the washing machine of rock and popular music.
Released in September and features their longest and jazziest compositions to date.
Fagen and Becker drafted even more giants of the jazz world including Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter and Tom Scott to execute their famously complex songs.
The album was a massive success, going platinum, spawning three radio hits, and winning a Grammy. Three years would follow till the follow-up to 'Aja' was released.
After Gaucho, and tired of the growing record company interference, and contract disputes Fagen and Becker walked away from Steely Dan in Fagen pursued a critically successful solo career and Becker was a producer.
The musical world had thought it had seen the last of Steely Dan. Donald Fagen was going to be making an unadvertised appearance and performing a couple of Steely Dan oldies.
